Magnepan MMGs vs. MMG W
September 8, 2004
I enjoyed reading your review of the Magnepan MMG W and MMG
C speakers very, very much. So much so that I went back through the GoodSound!
archives to find your older review of the MMGs from December of 2002. Both reviews were very
informative but have led me to ask yet another question.
It seems a subwoofer is necessary with both the MMG and MMG
W. Since I would be using a subwoofer with either model, what does the MMG give for
$550/pair that the MMG W at $300/pair does not?
Jim
Great question! I think the most obvious difference
would be their placement in your room The MMGs are floorstanding speakers that would be
situated in a more or less conventional fashion out into the room. The MMG Ws, on the
other hand, are designed to be wall mounted. The next most obvious difference is size. The
MMG W's panel is 38" high by 10 3/8" wide, while the MMG is 48" high and 14
1/2" wide. You can equate this to a larger "driver" in the MMG, suggesting
more output capability and perhaps more bass, too.
You can think of the difference almost like a regular
floorstander (MMG) versus a bookshelf speaker (MMG W). If I were choosing between the two,
I'd wonder "What is the best application for me?" Look at where and how you'd
want to place them and let that lead to your decision between the two.
Short speaker cables or interconnects?
September 6, 2004
I know that I have heard a rule of thumb for the length of
cables. Is it short interconnects and longer speaker cables or the other way around?
Pidgeon
It's the other way around. It is preferable to keep your
speaker cables as short as possible with there being less emphasis on the length of your
interconnects. In absolute terms it's really best to keep both short, but living in the
real world often doesn't allow that.
Great Magnepan review!

What a killer Magnepan review! You've just sealed my
decision as I have been struggling to decide on which speaker system is best for my room
and gear (I have a new Denon receiver and DVD player). I could not be happier with the
electronics, but I know my speakers (older Advents) are holding me back. One day I'd like
to add a good tuner and then I think I'd be set for a long time. Thank you for a great
website and reviews.
Gerald
Be sure to check out another review of the same
Magnepan system on our sister site, Home Theater & Sound, soon.
