Quad or Audio Physic?

June 13, 2005

I am in the process of buying my first hi-fi system. I use the Internet as my base of information.

I accidentally came across Quad 12Ls and liked the music that they created. I came back home and searched the Internet for more information on Quad and came across the review of the Quad 21L by Eric Hetherington. From the review, the Quad 21L seems to be a lovely speaker.

My problem is that the dealer with whom I auditioned the 12Ls has still not got his pair of 21Ls, which he ordered in ebony color. He also suggested to me the Audio Physic Yara. This is another speaker that I came upon accidentally and liked very much. But it is way above my budget.

So this is where I decided to write to you guys and find out if, based on your experience, the Yaras are worth the price as compared to the 21Ls. Also, I am thinking of the NAD C352 for amplification. Will this amp suit any of these speakers?

Milind Pai

To answer your second question first, yes the NAD would be fine for either the Quads or Audio Physics. It has plenty of power and can drive tough loads with ease. It also sounds good, making it a fine choice all around. Now to answer your first question with a question to you: Did you like the Audio Physic Yaras that much more than the Quad 12Ls? Did they just blow you away? If they did, and you can see yourself buying these speakers and keeping them for many years, then perhaps it's worth the substantial financial outlay. I've heard Audio Physic speakers many times and am almost always impressed with them. If, on the other hand, you're thinking of buying them just because the Quad 21Ls aren't readily available and you think you might be just as happy with these for much less money, then I suggest you wait for your dealer to get his pair of Quads and compare them with the Audio Physic speakers. That's the best way to decide whether the more expensive product is, in fact, that much better to you and worth the additional asking price.

Garage-sale find

June 7, 2005

My wife picked up some speakers at a garage sale. They are Phase Tech PC60s and look like an '80s model. Do you know anything about these or where I could find information? I was into high-end audio back then, but I don't remember these speakers. I went to look on the company's website, but they don't have any info on older models. I know they must be decent by the way they are designed.

Doing a little research on the Web shows that model to be about 15 years old. They were about $800 to $1000 new back then, so they were, in fact, quite expensive for their time. It looks like they originally were sold with a passive subwoofer as well. There does seem to be a number of people that still use and enjoy them today. Looks like your wife may have run across a bargain!

PSB T65 review

June 4, 2005

I just wanted to say thanks for the PSB T65 review you just posted. I own the T65s, and although I knew they were great speakers it was nice to see my choice corroborated by an independent source. It just goes to show that the GoodSound! writers have their fingers on the pulse of what good budget equipment should sound like. Keep up the great work!
