Stereo to multichannel?
February 9, 2006
I want to add home-theater capabilities to my audio system,
but I dislike the complexity involved -- at least what I think will be a complex process.
Right now I have a receiver, a DVD player, and one set of speakers. I can watch movies in
stereo, but would like at least 5.1 channels. The problem is that the receiver is two
channels only. Can I keep it and go multichannel?

The easiest route to take is to ditch the stereo
receiver and buy a surround-sound receiver. From there you simply have to add the center,
subwoofer, and surrounds, and youre all set. Your stereo receiver is of no real use
in a multichannel arrangement. Although theoretically you could use it to power your front
speakers, youre still going to need amplification for the rest of the system.
Keeping it would make matters more complicated, first from a wiring perspective, not to
mention getting the whole setup balanced properly. Todays 5.1-channel receivers are
priced right and widely available -- its definitely the simplest and most
cost-effective way to go.
Sub-$300 subwoofer?

Can you recommend a good inexpensive (not more than $300)
subwoofer? Thanks!

How about a pair? Athena Technologies has several models
available in their clearance center, which you can access from this link. They
even have models available for half what youre looking to spend, meaning you could
get two for stereo subs or for simply for more output in a home-theater system. This is
great value, and a good company to boot.
Monitor Audio?

I have listened to the Monitor Audio GR-series tower
speakers, and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this company and where they fit in
the home-theater/audio marketplace. The speakers seem a bit pricey, but I'm really
ignorant as to whether Monitor Audio is a good value. I would do a 6.1 system with rear
surrounds from the SR-series and the GR-series center-channel speaker all from Monitor
Audio.
Finally, is it fair to compare them against Axiom Epic 60
theater series with VP150 center-channel and QS8s? Appreciate any insights you may have.

I remember hearing the Monitor Audio Silver-series
speakers about eight years ago at a trade show and being very impressed. Since then
Ive seen their name a few times here and there but they seem to keep a low profile
-- at least in the North American market. Im not sure how their current line stacks
up against the competition, and frankly Im not sure how many dealers there are or
what kind of support youd receive if you ever needed warranty work or parts. Perhaps
you know more about that than me, having researched them. Axiom Audio is a line I am
familiar with and I know they make great products, support their customers after the sale,
and are up to date on technology and design. I can recommend them. Monitor Audio remains a
question in my mind.
