Subwoofer volume

February 5, 2007

My brother has an older Nakamichi RE-10 receiver and is considering connecting a subwoofer to it. He cannot find in the instructions on how to control the volume of the subwoofer from either the receiver or the remote, separately from the main volume control. The specs show it as having an "adjustable subwoofer output." Any advice?

Larry

My first advice would be to look for anything on the remote marked “Menu” or “Setup” or something similar to that. If you can access the menu system (remember you need a monitor connected to the video output of the receiver), look for “Speaker Level.” From there you should be able to access the subwoofer adjustment. Short of a menu system that will let you alter the subwoofer from that, there is likely not another adjustment. But any powered subwoofer I’ve ever seen will have a built-in level control that will allow relative volume adjustment. You should be able to calibrate it using that control, then you can use the master volume on the receiver from then on.

Speaker recommendations

I am in need of a new set of bookshelf speakers for my apartment, but I just don’t know where to start. The options seem limitless, and I don’t want to waste my money. What would you look at if you were me?

Rudy

We just published “What We'd Buy: Speakers Under $300.” This article is probably just what you are looking for as it gives you a number of speaker recommendations, all affordably priced. These are sure-fire winners and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with any of them.
