Yamaha and NAD

March 21, 2007

I need opinion on the Yamaha RXV2600 receiver or NAD T163 and NAD T973 separates. As the price goes up -- NAD doubles the price from the Yamaha -- how about the performance? I will be using the units 50% stereo and 50% home theater.

Jimmy

Although I have not heard either of the specific options you mention, I am familiar with both brands. Basing my answer on that prior experience, I would say that the differences in price just about describe the differences I would expect in performance. In other words, I think the NADs would outperform the Yamaha, particularly in the amplifier section. NAD simply makes great amplifiers. As for processing options for home theater, I doubt there would be much difference, but you’ll have to compare the specs to be sure. I would not hesitate to spend just a bit more and get the NADs.

Pioneer classics

March 19, 2007

I have a set of Pioneer HPM-100 speakers that were given to me by a relative. Are these any good? I was told to hang on to them even if I had to spend some money on them to get them repaired someday. Do you know anything about these?

Rob

A quick search reveals that the Pioneer HPM speakers are quite collectable. Have a look on eBay and you’ll find all types of replacement parts from new tweeters to grilles to the little logos that go on the speakers themselves. There seems to be a thriving market for keeping these speakers up and running, and that bodes well for anyone owning an older pair. Although I have never heard a pair, there must be something about their sound that keeps the market alive for these apparent classics. I would imagine that with a few Internet searches you could find some enthusiast websites that could give you more details. So the answer is that you very well have a real classic on your hands. Congratulations.
