Surround placement

June 13, 2007

I am having an issue with my surrounds not sounding very good. I have to place them close to my head because I have almost no room behind me, and they sound way too prominent. Lowering the level just makes the sound less intelligible, but not any better. Should I be doing something different?

Theresa

One thing you can do is point the speakers either toward the back wall or the side walls, as opposed to directly toward the listening position. In some cases there simply is not enough room to place direct-firing speakers -- which I assume is what you have -- behind the listening position. In those cases facing the speakers toward a wall, so that all you hear is more diffuse, reflected sound, is a good, if not perfect, solution. Give that a try and let me know how it works out.

Amp shutting off

June 7, 2007

I have a problem with my amp automatically shutting off after playing my music loud. It’s a 1300 Sony amp and I have a 1300W 12” sub plus two 600W 10” subs connected to it. Is it because I have too many subs connected to only one amp, or is it something else? Oh, and the amp is two channel, but I’m using only one. I'm kind of new at the whole sound deal, so I’d really like some advice. When it shuts off the little LED light turns from green to red. Sorry if that sounds dumb, but I just thought I’d add that to my explanation.

Taylor

You are loading down the amplifier by connecting too many speakers to it and it is going into protection mode. Perhaps move one of the subs to the other channel of the amp, and use only one sub for the remaining channel (you’d have to drop one sub from your system). I’d say that might make it work OK. If not, however, go to eBay and look for an older Crown amplifier. They are great for driving subs and will likely be just what you need.

Monitor Audio RS6

June 4, 2007

It's about time you reviewed these extremely affordable and much-better-than-average speakers. I'd still like to see the Monitor Audio RS1, the RS6's younger brother, take on the Energy RC-10. I think I know who would win.

Steve Anders

We’ll look into the RS1, although we can’t guarantee anything because we have many other products currently in the queue.
