Bose expansion

February 25, 2008

I have a Bose AM16 (6.1 version). I want to update it to 7.1. Can I just buy another Bose cube to make it 7.1? The reason I'm asking is because all of the surround and center speakers have to connect to the Bose sub. And there are only five surround and one center connectors on the subwoofer. If I buy another cube, how will I connect them together? I also have a second question. Because of the way my room is configured, I cannot hang the speakers on the wall. Can I install all of them on the ceiling instead?

To answer your second question first, I would not place a speaker designed for a stand or a shelf on the ceiling. Unless you simply have no other choice, the compromise in sound would be too great in my opinion. To answer your first question, I would propose a different route: There are a number of excellent speakers available designed for ceiling mounting. I’ve heard really good ones from Polk Audio and Infinity to name just two, and I know that Paradigm has speakers designed for such an application as well. Personally, I’d rather have a really good 5.1 system comprised of speakers made for a ceiling application than have a 7.1 system compromised severely by its placement. If you choose to buy the other Bose speakers, you’ll likely have to call their customer support line for your hook-up questions.

A pat on the back

Greetings. I was happy to discover your site after reading about it in my FM tuner group on Yahoo. At last, a website where I can understand and learn. I am trying to put together my first sound system after many years. I will be reading your archives. I just wanted to say "thank you" for a job well done.
