Paradigm versus KLH

I have some KLH speakers that I bought years ago at
Sam’s Club. I paid around $200 for them and preferred them to the Bose speakers that
the store also had for sale. I am thinking of upgrading them for the Paradigm Atoms and
wanted to get your opinion on what you think of the Atoms versus the KLH models. Any
advice would be much appreciated.

I also remember when Sam’s Club sold the KLH
speakers. That was many years ago, so I’m assuming that your speakers are somewhere
in the neighborhood of ten years old. Even though I have not heard the KLH speakers you
own, I do have a lot of experience with Paradigm. I don’t think it is too much of a
stretch to predict that an upgrade to the Paradigm speakers would be a huge improvement in
sound quality. Heck, even moving from a ten-year-old Paradigm to a new one would be a
significant upgrade. So going out on a limb, my advice would be to go for it. I don’t
think you’ll be disappointed in any way.
Speakers sound "tinny"

We recently had our kitchen redone and thought it would be
really nice to have in-ceiling speakers. We got four Boston Acoustic in-ceiling speakers.
They sound so "tinny," if that is a word. Our ceilings are 9’ and we have a
tile floor. We need help. Any advice on correcting this problem?

There are a few problems, all of them correctable to
some degree. Are the speakers controlled by a receiver? If so, use the tone controls of
the receiver to warm up the sound a bit. Turn the bass up a touch, and perhaps the treble
down a notch or two, and listen again. That might do the trick. Second, you could try a
really small powered subwoofer. Placed in an inconspicuous location this is the most
assured way to warm up the sound and get rid of that "tinny" sound you’re
hearing. Lastly, your kitchen is likely full of hard, reflective surfaces. This is a major
reason your speakers sound the way they do. If you put a couple of throw rugs down, they
would serve to improve the acoustics of the room and would surely help the sound.
